12 year old schoolboy inspires Fundraising Festival

Dillon Chapman from Frome has inspired a two week series of events across the town to raise awareness of both Dillon and his condition, as well as fundraise to help both his and his family’s life.

Dillon was diagnosed as a child with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, a progressive and incurable condition where tumours grow from nerve endings. Dillon has had over 10 operations, the most recent to amputate his leg after the tumours caused it such damage.

Starting on Saturday 9th May, Dillons Fundraising Day will start at Body Basics Studio at 10am with Zumba followed by Pilates, bands and balls, stretch sessions and kettle bells until 6pm.

Other events include Zumba at Southwick village hall on Friday May 8th at 8pm and on Sunday May 10th a Frome Town Youth Football tournament.

We will be collecting donations in Frome Leisure Centre’s reception area across the weekend from Friday 8th – Monday 11th May.

If you would like to get involved in any of the events taking place over the weekend, more information is available in the most recent Somerset Standard article here bit.ly/DillonsFundraising, or you can donate online at www.gofundme.com/rwve6js

A Marathon Journey, Kick Started By... A Marathon!

  tom 2

In October 2013, Tom Moon from Glastonbury received the news that he had secured a place in the London Marathon for 2014. After the initial excitement had subsided, the reality of the marathon sunk in. ‘It’s time to get fit, it’s time to join a gym.’

Little did Tom know, this was going to be the beginning to a whole new adventure and the turning point to an entirely new lifestyle.

Having selected Tor Sports and Leisure as his main training hub, working closely with the Gym Manager Rich Hill, whose wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise in sports performance, not only as a trainer, but as an athlete himself had a massive influence on Tom.

From October 2013 to April 2014 Tom progressed from a non exerciser to not only reducing his weight by over 2 stone, but completing the London Marathon in 4 hours 10 minutes, a very respectable time for a first time finisher. As well as these fantastic achievements, Tom, through exercise felt far happier, reduced his stress levels, massively boosted his confidence, and lifted the depression he had been suffering with for some time.

‘Tom came so far in the 6 months leading up to the Marathon, in the training runs prior to the marathon he was blowing his PB’s out the window as his fitness improved. The psychological benefits Tom has felt are huge testament to the positive impact exercise has on us’

With this new lease of life, Tom has taken the plunge into triathlons, but not any triathlon…. An Iron Man. That’s 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle (the distance from Glastonbury to Exeter and back again) and 26.2 (an entire Marathon), in July 2015!

‘I wanted to push myself, and really see what I can do, and what better event to enter’ Tom said.

Tom’s training has understandably stepped up a few gears now, continuing to work with Rich at Tor Sports and Leisure.

Rich Says ‘I have every belief that Tom will be able to complete the event in a superb time, with his approach to every training session and determination he will smash it’

Tom will be raising money for Scope, if you wish to donate please log on to
